New Qwest DSL Deals
12 Months: 1.5Mbps for $20, 7Mbps for $30
We didn't mention Qwest in our recent discussion of next-gen deployment, though they too are working on some scattered ADSL2+ deployment, as well as 1.5Mbps capped fiber where it makes the most "financial sense". In the interim they've unveiled some new introductory DSL prices - which we mentioned over the weekend, with details available in our Qwest forum. The Qwest website now features the offer.

Big deal

"If you hit the order button, I get this: $19.99 a month for the first 12 months ($24.99 a month without a qualifying home phone package). Thereafter, $39.99 a month ($44.99 a month without a qualifying home phone package)."

Let me get out my calculator

"12 Months: 1.5Mbps for $20, 7Mbps for $30"
Ok not that I'm complaining about 7Mbps for $30. Which I would gladly beat someone up for by the way. But that seems a little high for 1.5Mbps when your only charging $30 for 7M.

Lets see 1.5 or 7. for $10 more a month which would I choose? Which would you choose, which would almost anyone choose for that matter? Can you say cattle herding. This is the same kind of marketing Charter uses.

Its not really a matter of choice but what you can actually get. Allot of Qwest customers including myself can only get the 1.5 service being we are on remote terminals. You have to be close to a CO to get faster speeds. Some might qualify for 5 megabits and fewer yet might get the 7. Some people say they still can only qualify for the 256/256 service.

But here in Albuquerque, the only other game in town is comcast. And allot of people including myself are stuck paying 57 dollars for HSI with the predatory penalty of not subbing to CC TV. Qwest has never been competitive speed or price wise with Comcast in this market. But this new offer from qwest is going to change that. At least they are now competitive price wise. And I personally believe for allot of people that HSI is more price driven then it is speed driven.

Pricing seems logical to me. 1.5mbps is plenty of bandwidth for a lot of people. Why pay more if you don't need it? Some people won't qualify for 7mbps, so at least they can enjoy a price break as a consolation.

Most of the costs are in the set up, maintenance and support of the DSL line and those don't change too much based on speed. The speed tier is just a setting in the DSLAM, assuming they have enough backbone bandwidth to support it.

Re: Let me get out my calculator

5.5M difference between the plans I'm sorry that's just crazy. I know that it's just an up to potential speed with no guaranties that you'll get anywhere near 7M. But it's wrong to sell a service with that much potential difference in speeds.

The prices may be cheaper then they were before but they make little sense to me other then herding someone into the higher plan. Which if it ever turns out that they can't meet those speeds (at least a reasonable amount) for the mass public then it's even more wrong.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the HSI providers offering higher speeds in this great land of ours. I'm even all the more for lower HSI pricing in this great nation as well.

It's about time we began to catch up with the other countries in some regards. But IMO this nation it's Government, HSI providers and even to some extent it's citizens have a long way to go. This nation should be nothing less the #1.

DSL Blowout Sale?

Since Qwest is slashing prices, will they lower the prices they charge Ruby Ranch for their unbundled distribution subloops?

Re: upload?

Cox Cable is better than Qwest in Arizona, Qwest has 7 Mbps / 896 Kbps, Cox has 9 Mbps / 1024 Kbps

Re: upload?

thanks for the info. I doubt Cox can offer cable for 30 bucks though.

Who am I kidding really? I would still go with who ever is faster!!

It's gonna jump

Not much of a deal, good pricing for year, then it jumps.

But being they don't charge for modem for that year, there are no up front costs. No activation or install charges. The only charge is the 9.95 shipping and handling for modem. So for new users, there is nothing to loose on this offer. In my case, I will save 360 dollars off my Comcast HSI and that is some change. A year is a long time and allot can happen in that time. If Qwest decides to double the price on my 1.5 connection when comcast is a 6 megabits, then you can imagine what I will do and others will do. Personally, I don't think Qwest would want to go back to being totally non competitive with comcast. But if they do.. they will suffer dearly in market share.. After a year I can sign up under comcast as a new customer and probably get cheap HSI for another 6 months. So I am looking at this Qwest offer as getting me discounted HSI for 18 months.

Most ISP's never reward loyal customers with any discounts. Its always the new customers that get the deals.. I usually play them against each other. Its the only way to get a break. Once I cancelled my HSI with comcast and went to dialup with earthlink for 6 months because I got tired of paying 57 dollars in penalties with CC with no CC TV etc... and then I went back to CC HSI as a new customer and believe it or not received HSI for 9 months at 19.99. You can tell I don't put up with that penalty.

Although I hate to say it, Qwest over Comcast

Although 1.5 seems to be a slow speed, no one has mentioned that Qwest offers 896 upload speed, so there are offering near SDSL speeds. I just recently noticed this when my emails were faster than ever and my upload speeds were around 112. But this is on my girlfriends computer because i have comcast at home with their high latency and inconsistent speeds. I know i bashed qwest in the past but if they can keep this up and lower their prices a little bit more, they have the chance to overtake comcast in areas like WA. (I will advertise them)

Re: Although I hate to say it, Qwest over Comcast

If Qwest advertises this offer very much at all, I think they will get a huge response in the comcast areas. Qwest used to send brochures for DSL specials to everyone that was eligible. If they do that again, I think the response will be strong. And if this promo is like most others they have offered in the past, it will no doubt be extended several times.
