Ofcom Launches Investigation Into British Telecom
After Rival Accuses Giant of Squeezing Out Competitors
As we saw in the United States and more recently in Canada, it's not particularly hard for entrenched industry incumbents to slowly and surely strangle smaller ISPs. It certainly helps when you've got apathetic regulators stocked with people who worked at the larger incumbents who'll pay lip service to your complaints, but repeatedly rule against you. That's the scenario currently facing Talk Talk in the UK, who has managed to get UK regulator Ofcom to launch an investigation into anti-competitive wholesale pricing by UK incumbent British Telecom:
quote:
UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has launched a probe into whether BT Group is abusing its dominant position when pricing its superfast broadband, following a complaint by smaller rival TalkTalk Telecom Group..."BT is disappointed that Ofcom has opened the case despite the lack of any evidence. We are confident there is no case to answer," BT said in an emailed statement.
Since we've seen this exact scenario play out in countless countries at this point, you don't need to be Nostradamus to see how this ends.

Ofcom...

Actually, Ofcom is extremely effective in the UK. It's what the FCC should be.

Re: Ofcom...

but that would mean companies that are CLECs would have had to do what they promised to do. Build their own networks.
