Test Your ISP For BitTorrent Shenanigans
New Glasnost Project tests for ISP throttling, blocking

Torrentfreak directs our attention to the Glasnost Project, a new Java applet project aimed at testing whether ISPs are fiddling with user BitTorrent traffic. A growing number of ISPs are deploying a variety of monitoring and traffic shaping hardware but aren't willing to talk about it. That makes shopping for a broadband connection a more difficult affair.

Click for full size
As a result, a growing number of outfits are trying to make these practices more transparent to the end user, who may not have the networking knowhow to test their own connection with applications like Wireshark.

Preliminary results show widespread blocking of BitTorrent transfers only in the U.S. and Singapore. The results highlight throttling, as well as the number of times that transfers to the Glasnost Project servers are interrupted by RST packets generated by some ISP along the path.

So far the project has only tested 5358 nodes across 78 countries, so I imagine they'd welcome your data. A more detailed explanation of their test can be found here which explains precisely how they determine a BitTorrent connection to be "blocked." As you might expect, Comcast doesn't exactly shine when tested.

Point.

Until this "Glasnost Project," which, humorously or not, is named after a scheme under which a former Soviet leader tried to perpetuate totalitarian rule in the USSR, actually provides a complete list of countries and ISPs which block Bittorrent, I think it is premature to conclude anything from it.

If you had gone to the link you would have seen how dumb of a question it is. They are still gathering data. If you had looked at all before asking you would have realized that. It is still a new tool which not a vast majority of users are aware of. The sample from which this information was taken was a very small one specially from other countries.

Seriously , they made no such claims. The writer of this article did. All they did was provide their current data. They did not say it was a representative sample of reality or anything. They did not say they had come to any conclusion.

So before you speak, I ask once again that you FREAKING REVIEW THE SOURCE.

Yawn. You never answered my questions, so being clueless, I will simply assume you do eat raw food, drive in an unfinished car, and live in an unfinished house.

Or what? You're going to tell on me? It isn't my fault that an objective analysis wasn't done here.

China is listed as having 8 nodes tested from 6 ISPs with no blocks reported.

Obviously this is a new project looking for additional data samples.

At best, this website provides tools for testing. But without actual research being done in many of these countries, it is not possible to reach a credible conclusion.

It would be like saying "Wyoming has more crime than California" when all your evidence is just the crime stats for Wyoming and nothing else for California.

Re: Incomplete List

At best it shows that at least for the limited amount of testing, SINGAPORE and the USA are WORSE offenders. However, being the scale of ISPS tested are limited (pending more exist obviously), only cannot make this assertion on a whole. Merely, one can just look at the data and say in terms of what has been collected, the US and SINGAPORE are fairing much worse at this given moment. That may or may not change, obviously. Time is he deciding factor. Still, it's sad to even note we make the list. We champion the cause of Democracy while doing everything we can to back paddle from it in the last 10 years in both private and governmental sectors.

Well Ireland has now pulled ahead of the US:

Ireland 1 out of 7 = 14%
Canada 1 out of 99 = 1 %
Malaysia 1 out of 2 = 50%
Singapore 1 out of 6 = 16%
US - 10 out of 199 = 5%

Edit: So the US is 4th now...

Hey by all means add to the list. As I said above pnh, it is reflective of the data set at a given moment. The fact we make the list at all is disturbing if you ask me.

I think at this point it's perfectly fair to conclude that SO FAR, it appears the USA and Singapore are the worst offenders.

That's the great thing about on-going tests, the conclusions and results can be updated as time goes on.

So how do the account for a tester that may be sitting behind a company firewall? Does it account for that? What if I am sitting in a hotel that blocks this traffic? Does that mean that the ISP is falsely accused of shaping this traffic?

I haven't personally run the test as all their connections are in use when I try it but you make an interesting point. What if isn't your ISP that is blocking the traffic but your ISP's provider instead? Does the test differentiate between which service provider is doing the blocking?

The blocking of both are equally egregious, but don't kid yourself. American ISPs are blocking/throttling a hell of a lot more than just P2P. P2P is the start of the battle for who gets to be the gatekeeper/toll attendant.

Personally, I think Bittorent is mostly used for illegal means. However, I still think with that said, the user should be the one to make the decision versus the ISP. I mean you are allowed to go out and buy a knife in the U.S. Most people will use this knife to cut things. However, there will always be a few who use said knife to commit crimes such as murder. Does that mean knives should be outlawed in the U.S.? While this is a big comparison, it's true to this circumstance. People should be given the freedom to do as they wish. If they make the wrong choice, they should be the only one to blame. When isps decide to play bad cop, they put themselves in harms way for lawsuits and FCC investigation as we see.

My isp in Chile doesnt block p2p nor bittorrent, nothing at all ...

I usually download from popular trackers at full speed from my 2mbps cable line. (at 252 kB/s)

And unlike China our government doesnt apply any censorship at all either. We are as free as we can get.

What

Our measurements found the following characteristics for your link (ool-18bc11bc.dyn.optonline.net - 24.188.17.*)

* Downstream Bandwidth: 12219 Kbps * Downstream Queue: 55 ms
* Upstream Bandwidth: 2014 Kbps * Upstream Queue: 826 ms
Notes:

* Your upstream queue is larger than 300ms and thus larger than average round-trip times in the Internet (e.g., 50ms for US coast-to-coast delays and 150ms for transatlantic delays) which is the recommended size for queues.

Certain ISPs have been shown to rate limit or block BitTorrent traffic sent by their customers.
While there are multiple reports of this
      on the web,
only a few ISPs have admitted that they manipulate BitTorrent traffic. And, to date, it is hard
for users without networking expertise to gain evidence about the behavior of their ISP.

This test suite creates a BitTorrent-like transfer between your machine and our server, and
determines whether or not your ISP is limiting such traffic. This is a first step towards making
traffic manipulation by ISPs more transparent to their customers.

What can you test?

Our test focuses on the popular BitTorrent protocol as many ISPs
      are suspected to manipulate
BitTorrent traffic. This type of traffic can be identified by the port it is sent on (e.g., TCP port
6881) or by BitTorrent content headers which occur in the packets.
Therefore, we designed our online tool to detect whether your ISP is using one of the following techniques:

Throttling all BitTorrent traffic.

Throttling all traffic at well-known BitTorrent ports.

Throttling BitTorrent traffic only at well-known BitTorrent ports.

Note that some ISPs do not throttle all BitTorrent traffic but only if this traffic exceeds a
certain threshold. Thus, passing our tests does not necessary mean that there is no throttling
       occurring on your link.

I know Road Runner is kicking me.

Every time I run BT, a few hours later my Connection dies.
The rest of my network is fine, the other PCs have no trouble surfing the net. I have to reboot to reset what ever it is that shuts off my internet connection.

It's called: Having a shitty modem and/or router. I have encountered this problem so many times and solved it for people by removing their router from the picture it's not even funny.

WTF??

How nice. When I went to the Glasnost site to check my ISP I had a nice pop-up showing me a whole bunch of well-endowed ladies that want to engage in coital activities...

the progress bar never moves and eventually times out and says test failed

is there some setting I need to change in IE or router to get this to work?
