Time Warner Cable Offers Free Calls To Japan
While Several Carriers Offer Access To Japan TV

According to a statement by Time Warner Cable, the company is providing its subscribers with free calls to Japan (specifically from March 11 to April 15) as the crisis continues to unfold. "We have seen an increase in the number of calls made by our customers to family, friends and colleagues in Japan who have been touched by the events that occurred earlier today," says the company," adding that "they are all in our thoughts and we hope that this program removes a small measure of worry from our customers." A number of companies, including AT&T, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Verizon and Comcast are also providing users with free ongoing access to Japan TV during the quake, after the 24-hour channel's distributor made the open feed available to all companies.

Update: AT&T has also said they'll offer free wireless calls and SMS to Japan -- and credits for up to 60 minutes for landline customers -- through March 31.

Update 2: Verizon has set up a way to quickly donate $10 via SMS to a number of different support organizations. They're also offering free calls to Japan for most wireless and landline customers until April 10.

Wait..

So Tv Japan had to suggest to the cable companies to carry the feed? Sounds a bit backwards..

maybe it's just me still trying to catch up on lost sleep...

Re: Wait..

I believe the distributor opened up the feed nationwide and told cable and sats it was there if they wanted it. Not sure where Karl got that channel suggested cable and sat companies carry feed.

We've had it on our lineup in San Antonio for awhile but it was part of an Asian tier (about $25).

However, looks like TV Japan & the carriers just opened it for free....

Re: DFW

Oh oh!

First AT&T announced this to seem very philanthropy.
Then they dropped the data caps on the people that are so impressed now by their good intentions.

Does this mean today we see a data cap announcement by Time Warner!?

Stay tunned!

Thanks, I was watching the Japanese language feed on Cablevision but couldn't understand a word.

Very nice

Good to see all these companies helping out either if it's PR or sincere help. Glad JapanTV is available during this event for free. 25 dollars is way too much money to spend every month

They ARE sneaky...

Don't get me wrong, it's good they are doing this, but I think it's a diversion tactic to get people not to think about the data caps.

Best coverage is at NHK World

For those of you with iPhones/iPads/Touchs put "NHK World" in the search engine in the iTunes Store for the NHK World App. For the rest of you go to the link below, it is in English.

Free calls but how far will they reach?

The calls may make it to Japan but the last mile land lines are gone in the hardest hit areas. Cell service is spotty, over loaded and most have lost their phones. The only sure way to call is satellite phone.

What channel is it for Comcast?

So if your system doesn't have the channel Comcast isn't adding it just for this? I don't think my system has it.
