Verizon Downplays Comcast Xfinity Enhancements
Insists They've Been Doing This Stuff for Years
Last week Comcast unveiled its new Xfinity set top and GUI overhaul, which in many ways is playing catch up to some of the things AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS TV had been doing for several years. Given telcoTV operators have been looking up at cable and need to gain market share, they've been more aggressive in adding new features -- including incorporating social-media widgets and Internet video functionality into the set top. Verizon last week pinged reporters several times to remind them a lot of these improvements were things Verizon has been doing for a while, a press release noting that Verizon's latest 1.9 IMG update for their TV set tops is fairly feature packed. Verizon's not wrong; early impressions of 1.9 by our users have been borderline bubbly, something we just don't see very often. Unfortunately, some bugs have delayed the release of the new update, which Verizon for some time has insisted will be widely deployed in "the coming months."
