Verizon's New SmartHub LTE Router Brings Unlimited Data Home

Verizon today unveiled a new "SmartHub" LTE router that lets users enjoy unlimited cellular broadband in the home via WiFi. According to the full Verizon announcement, the unit itself will cost you either $200 outright, or $100 with a two year contract (with an early termination fee of $175). Data plans for the unit start at $40 per month for 4GB of LTE data, up to an unlimited data option for $110 per month (plus a $20 monthly "line access fee").

All told, $130 per month for unlimited data isn't cheap, but it's likely an interesting option for customers who can't get fixed-line broadband at all, or are stuck on expensive, capped satellite broadband plans.

According to Verizon, there's an LED display at the top of the device that lets you quickly access data usage and Wi-Fi passwords. There's also an included battery for when the power goes out.

Verizon also says there's an app that lets the unit become the heart of a connected home. Of course if you're on a capped data plan and not named Verizon, you may not enjoy having every internet of things device in your home eating up your previous usage allotments with firmware updates.

"To make your smart home even smarter, download Verizon Home, a companion app for SmartHub that lets you conveniently monitor and control smart home accessories from your smartphone," says the company's release. "Get notifications and schedule routines like adjusting lights, setting thermostat temperatures and more, from your sofa or on the go."

You can find more detail in Verizon's full release, and additional information on the hardware itself over at the Verizon Wireless website. There's also an ongoing thread in our Verizon Wireless forum where users discuss what it's like using a Verizon cellular connection as your only broadband line.

Category 4?

This hardware is dead on arrival, it uses Sequans (exactly...) outdated category 4 LTE modem, and only supports band 4 and 13, while missing band 2, 5, carrier aggregation, etc.

Three years ago this would've been an option worth considering, but these days people can get better service with their existing Category 6, 9, 12, 16 smartphones with mobile hotspot.

This is VZs Copper Replacement.

The SmartHub is clearly intended to replace POTS and DSL. Easy to install and has a battery backup to appease customers and regulators who care about loop power.

This product will most likely be used in areas where the copper fails but the central office lacks FiOS equipment, in line with Verizon's network modernization plan.

I dont like this, but it is what it is. At least the unlimited option is offered and the price isn't as high as it could be.

Let's hope they don't drop FiOS expansion in areas where the equipment is present.

10GB and then 3G speeds

I asked Verizon how much data I would get if I added it to my new unlimited plan and got this response
quote:
Agent: I'll be happy to help you with more information about our devices. You can go ahead with your questions when you are ready!
You: If I add the SmartHub to my new unlimited plan, how does data allotment work?
Agent: The SmartHub would be considered a Mobile hotspot, so usage will be at 4G speeds for the first 10 GB then drop to 3G speeds.

BS Fees

This device comes with a $20/month line access fee.... in addition to the data cost.
No external antenna?
No RJ45 LAN?
Only 700/1900 MHz?

Pass....

Throttled after 22GB if tower is congested

Throttled after 22GB if there's congestion - »www.howardforums.com/att ··· 95682318

So totally useless in areas where it's actually needed, after more than one person actually subscribes to this service.

Worthless service plan then.

Sky must be falling!!

Thought spectrum was finite, and wireless data had to be controlled. Not even 3 months after stating They were kicking "data hogs" off the network. There selling wireless as a whole home replacement to wire line. Guess that nonexistent T-mobile pressure is fictionally pushing some stress points. Shamo must be back flipping.

What a joke!!!

I've got T-Mobile One on 2 lines and a 3rd Table One line that I pay a total of $125 a month with total unlimited data. I use the Table One sim in a USB Modem connected to a CradlePoint MBR1200B router. I've used 300GB on the Table Line and have never been throttled.

Verizon is a bad joke...
