iPhone 4 May Be Announced June 22nd
AT&T's last chance to lock users in long term?
While the iPhone's recent firmware update was interesting, it should be much more interesting to see what's in the next iPhone hardware incarnation -- given this could be AT&T's last opportunity to sign iPhone users to long-term contracts before AT&T's exclusive agreement with Apple expires and users flee to Verizon (rumored to get the iPhone soon). According to Gizmodo you shouldn't have long to wait -- Apple has apparently booked the The Yerba Buena Center for Arts in San Francisco for a June 22 announcement that should include the new iPhone revision. Given the sexy specifications for new smartphones (like Sprint's new WiMax/EVDO dual-mode phone the the HTC EVO 4G or the Verizon HTC Incredible), Apple and AT&T may finally have a little work to do.

Well a source at Verizon corp offices said.

Actually it is not a quote, but somewhere among this lines.. (it's been some time since he said that)

After the campaign that we have put with the Driod, it is highly unlikely that we would get the iPhone, if we do we would contradict ourselves. In our ads we claim that the Droid can do all this and all that (insinuating that the iPhone cant) and now if we get the iphone we say that everything we said about the Droid is not 100% truth.

Maybe the position has changed since it is not the "same iphone" now that 4 is out.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard from someone that "a Verizon source told me", I could retire to Guam. Everyone and their sister had the iPad pegged for Verizon. I even have my company people yapping about how theyre gonna get their Verizon iPhone. This rhetoric has been going on for three years. It's old, tired, and unreliable.

You could probably retire to Guam even if only 1 person told you that.

It's not just that. The latest "rumors" that have gone around major news outlets lately state that manufacturing a Verizon friendly iphone wont start until late this year (sept-nov and that's if these rumors are accurate) which means if Verizon gets it it will come no sooner than Christmas time. At that point however VZW claims they will have LTE running in several markets. It would make more sense for everybody that a CDMA iphone when VZW is rolling out 4G would be stupid, of course apple did that with their first and no longer supported iphone so maybe they would do it again, but an LTE iphone on VZW would make a lot more sense next year rather than all the R&D testing programming and supporting that would go into a CDMA vzw phone platform that is being changed.

verizon wants the iPhone

Everyone know Verizon is dying to get the iPhone but I think the droid has really pushed steve jobs buttons and the fact that Verizon's network most likely can't handle the iPhones data usage. A lot of people I know are complaining about the data network now because it has gotten much slower then before.

Re: verizon wants the iPhone

I've noticed quite a bit of degradation in Verizons network since getting a Droid. With my Omnia, I was limited to the very slow clunky nature of the phone spec/OS. Now that I have a capable and competent phone, Verizon also had a large influx in data usage and now I am limited by the actual network.

I really wish apple would just give the Verizon Fanboys what they want. I'm tired of reading the constant yammering about how Verizon's network is better, faster, blah blah.

But back on Topic: Yeah, I'll likely be picking this up as I'm off contract already (and I won't be standing in line though.)

I have Zero use for an iPad.

The network is bigger, but is steadily going downhill with too many data users.

iPhone stagnation

I'm quite curious to see what this next iPhone will offer. Unless it's a ground-up refresh and overhaul, i doubt i'll be impressed.

OS4's "multitasking" (aka app-switching) and continued use of pop-over notifications (rather than background like every other os) already indicate that there still won't be true multitasking available. So far all people can come up with is a processor update to the A4, and a front-facing camera (which ATT's network will choke even harder on).

But hey, they might surprise me. It's been a while since they've impressed me, but maybe this time...

I'll assume you pointed out a front-facing camera because it will handle video conferencing capabilities.

Well... NO 3G network in existence today could handle video conferencing (on 1-2 M iPhones). If someone has told you otherwise, you have been duped...

I too am interested to see what the next phone will offer.. and I imagine like the previous years, there will be VZW rumors but at&t will keep exclusivity (at least thru 2010... who knows what happens in first of 2011).

Considering other networks carry significantly more data than ATT does. I doubt your claim.

I've been saying this for years: ATT's network is poorly managed. That's why they're having so many iPhone issues, while not a single other carrier on the planet is suffering under the supposedly heavy load. So implying that 320x240 video conferencing at 250kbps is a horrible strain on most networks based upon ATT's crappy one is a hasty generalization.

HTC buying Palm to get their WebOS software

There are a lot of rumors this week that HTC may buy Palm in order to get the WebOS operating system software. That would make HTC a premium smartphone maker with links to the new MS Win 7 Mobile; Google's Android; and Palm's WebOS systems. Seems like too many OS's to support and develop, but it does put HTC in to the thick of the fight for smartphone dominance against Apple.

Sprint HTC EVO

First off, the EVO is Tri-band, CDMA, EVDO and Wimax. Secondly, there will not be a 4G iphone on At&t, At&t will not have 4G service until 2012 at the earliest. Lastly, the Incredible is basically a Nexus One, although it will have a 1Ghz processor, it will be under clocked to 700Mhz.

Re: Sprint HTC EVO

By the way... no carrier is coming out with 4G service anytime soon anyway.

People, and companies, seem to like to think that anytime they release a little more speed that it's somehow another "generation" of service... its not. They may be changing up technology a little.. they may be increasing the speeds a little, but they're not releasing what is defined as 4G service.

If this were the case, I think most U.S. carriers will be on 12G service before they finally actually hit what really is "4G" service.

A few things:

-For the WebOS and Palm rumors, it's all over the place. So everyone just please refrain from tossing in your select rumor as there are too many. HTC, a bunch of Chinese companies, Lenovo. It never ends. Nobody knows so let's leave it at that.

-On the iPhone itself, they started with a CDMA prototype. VzW didn't bite (didn't want to give up $$ from data plans). AT&T was desperate. So they gave Apple everything plus more. Now I'm not surprised if a CDMA iPHone comes out. But for who? VzW or Sprint? Unlocked CDMA? Nobody knows.

-All those touting iPhone 4.0 and their "multi-tasking". You have NO idea what true multi-tasking is. Only WebOS from Palm does it perfectly for a mobile OS. And knowing all the fan boys, regardless of the update, everyone will run and get another Jesus phone without regard to value.

-Keeping my Palm Pre and getting the HTC EVO. The thing is a beast. And the iPhone can have some hardware updates, but it won't be LTE and it will still be iPhone OS4. Only the EVO (so far) has pushed the boundries at the moment. LTE won't be smartphone ready until 2011. Oh, you'll see it in laptop cards soon. But not on a smartphone for a while.

P.S. Have fun getting advertised to like crazy with iAds. What a pathetic waste.

Re: Heh

I think we all, even us dumb iPhone users, know what true multitasking is, we've been using multitasking computers for years. Apple is using the more important parts of multitasking for most apps, saved states, background music playing, gps on a smartphone and skipping true multitasking for battery life
which isn't perfect but it's a reasonable tradeoff.

Now I am a iPhone user but I acknowledge that WebOS has some positives as well as Andriod, but you seem like a WebOS version of the apple fanboy lol

Each device has positives and negatives, and appeals to different groups.

WebOS is known to have many development limitations, in respect to access to the hardware, which is probably why they can afford to due true multitasking, you'll probably never see the games I have on my iPhone on WebOS

Andriod is really good, but isn't polished enough for my tastes and has a very fractured market.

My Iphone has a great UI and tons of apps, but those apps are held and controlled via apple's death grip, which does annoy me but nothing else has the polish I want, which is why I am carefully watching what android does.

None of them is perfect, and I think it's interesting that people mentioned Verizon's network strain since the Droid. I for one expect that Verizon's network will get hit harder than people expect if they get the Iphone, I don't think they have experience with the density of heavy smartphones users that AT&T has weathered with the iPhone

Re: Heh

WebOS has been my first entry to the smartphone category. I do have an iPod Touch, tho after getting used to the multi-tasking on WebOS, I find it harder and harder to use.

My biggest issue is with Apple diverting their origins and becoming another Microsoft. Their limitations on developers and what they can use (see their spat with Adobe) have been mind boggling. We should choose what we want to be on our phones. The very fact that I have to jailbreak a phone just to install non-app store apps is silly.

WebOS has 3D games, some exactly just like the ones in the App Store. And honestly, I think the Pre (and even the Pixi) were simply beta hardware to see what WebOS does.

And while people love to make use of the # of apps for the iPhone, they should really talk about the quality of apps. They are some very nice ones. But it's always about numbers. And that's sad. Cause in every app store/catalog/world, a good chunk of them will be useless.

Now I am really interested to see the WebOS PDK come out of beta. The very fact that a developer can port iPhone apps to WebOS apps in days with the PDK is freakin amazing. I really hope developers will simply port over what they have and really give WebOS a solid shot. It's craving killer apps.

Umm, the iPhone apps already have ads featured in them. All iAds does is integrate them into the app. So if you accidentally touch the ad it will advertise it in the application itself instead of redirecting you to the safari page.

I think that's the reason that people are up in arms about the iAds. This is the same concept they have with many of their current free applications that are ad driven. Why complain when they make it less intrusive?

I do agree that the iPhone 4 needs to come with guns blazing because there are many other phones out that have some really "WOW" features. Thankfully, my contract is up with AT&T in May so I'll wait to see what all comes out between then and July.

Actually, the Maemo 5 OS, found in the Nokia N900 runs a full-blown linux kernel, and as such, is a Desktop-class Debian-based Linux OS that multitasks fairly well.

Also, the iPhone already multitasks (HINT: ever played music while browsing on Safari, or talked and surfed concurrently?)... in fact it already runs the standard UNIX task manager. The godly Steve Jobs just neutered it, among other things, only to add it right back in later as a new "feature"...

But I'd agree, this slow process of neuter-and-add is tiring me out, and hopefully consumers will eventually wake up and smell the coffee.

Fanboy still? Seriously? Grow up already.

People still don't get it. Who cares which fanboy is with which company anyway? Don't like something? You have a choice... Don't buy it. Plain and simple. No need to bash a neighbor just because he prefers a different phone. No one's more right or wrong than the other. It's just a matter of preference.

Agreed in a way but it doesn't mean people can't complain about their phone even though they bought it

If the phone has problems, people should discuss it. Not pretend it doesn't exist

T-Mobil 3G Support

IF AT&T loses its exclusive lock on the iPhone, I would like to see the iPhone 4 come with the extra frequency support to handle the T-Mobil frequency needed for 3G. Right now, the current iPhones if modded to be used on T-Mobil will handle voice but only 2G (Edge) Data since the 3G Data uses a different frequency than AT&T does (ie:Data falls back to Edge). This would be a simple fix unlike the Verizon fix that would be needed to support their current network.

Yeah apple could release a tmobile iphone with almost no additional costs (hardware, research, support, infrastructure, etc...).

I'm surprised they haven't yet, and if they dont in very short order after ATT's agreement has ended you can look with a very suspicions eye at the cupertino company.

On less thing for Crab-Apples to Crab about

According to Leo LaPort over at TWiT, His sources tell him the G4 will have multi tasking, and this will also included in a OS revision for the iPad. Apple is feeling the bite of the Nexus 1 Andriod phone. But as Leo also pointed out when he said this knowing Apple this could all be a pile horse manure.
